Peace Like a River.

A friend of mine posted a comment on his facebook status one day that said “if there is ever a book that is written as beautifully as the last two chapters of peace like a river, he wanted to find it” well at this comment I had to read this book. Normally I would have never even picked it up, the story outline didn’t strike me as interesting, but by the first chapter I was instantly caught by it. So much so in fact that I read it again to Jackie out loud one night when we went out for pizza. She teared up. It was that beautiful. That is the only way I can describe this book, “beautiful”. The story is slow, but steady and engaging, I completely fell in love with each character. I was reminded of “to kill a mocking bird” when reading it. I wanted to be the father, Jeremiah. His devotion to prayer and the scripture was powerful, and it showed throughout the story, it was a key element all the way up to the end. His calm and patient nature as a single parent was inspiring. Reuben, the story teller in this book is about 11 years old. I was reminded of myself at that age. His younger sister Swede is hilarious spunky and well beyond her age in vocabulary. I was reminded of a young Kelly over @ easycheese.net, not that I knew Kelly at that age, but imagine this is what she would have been like.  Swede also loved her brother dearly, who had bad asthma. She took care of him and their relationship reminded me of the one I have now with my sister. As for the last two chapters, my friend was right, and I have goosebumps thinking about it again. I loved this book.

now that’s how you get somebody to read a book…..blow smoke up her behind about the cool character that is *just like* her. i’ll definitely add it to my list.

p.s. i loved “The Help”. consider adding it to your list. you can even be skeeter if you want.
